As for the pen, I used just normal Sharpie. I actually wouldn't recommend that, because for a while it smudged if you get even a little water on it (it seems ok now, but I haven't played it in a very long time). I think there are people who do this kind of decoration thing for real though - they use varnish I think. In any case I am not the one to ask about the best pen type, so I am sorry about that

I don't think you should cover the whole body. I like how fresh it looks with some of the wood showing. Otherwise it'd look WAY too busy.
